How to setup your First Google Tag Manager Container
Setup Your First Google Tag Manager
Google Tag Manager (GTM) is one of the many services Vikhale Digital offers. In this article we will go through a short explanation of what GTM is, and how to setup your first “Tag”.
What is Google Tag Manager?
GTM allows you to quickly and easily add code to your website without the need of a developer. This means that implementation of code, that used to take a long time to implement, (due to approval and deployment processes) is no longer an issue. With just a few clicks GTM can publish new code instantly, with the possibility of reverting back to an older “version” of code should the need arise.
Implementing your GTM code
The only time a code implementation is required, is when you have to install the GTM code itself- this code is inserted immediately after the opening <body> tag of your web pages.
Creating your first GA tag
GTM comes with the following built in tags:
If the above tags don’t suit your needs, you’re able to insert custom HTML, Custom Image, or suggest a tag:
Next select a tag type:
Once you have selected a tag, you will be presented with the option of choosing what triggers the tag to fire:
In this example, I have chosen “Google Analytics”, “Universal Tracking” and selected “All Pages”.
You will then have to configure this tag with a Name, Tracking ID, and Track Type:
The tag is now created:
All you have to do now is publish this tag, by clicking the “Publish” button on the top right hand corner of the page:
Subsequently clicking the “Publish Now” button:
The tag is now published – This is a basic page view tracking code for Universal Analytics, it allows us to track users and view their data through Google Analytics.
That’s it! Congrats on “Setup of First Google Tag Manager“!
